Generative AI for Product Managers: PRD Agent

Generative AI for product managers, in practice: PRD Agent turns a short brief into a structured, reviewable PRD in minutes. Open source, so any team can run or extend it.

The situation

Generative AI for product managers keeps getting pitched as a category, but most PMs just want one thing fixed: the hours spent writing the same shape of document over and over. A PRD describes the problem, the user, the solution shape, the success criteria, and the open questions. The format is well understood. What eats the week is translation, turning a few founder or PM sentences into the full document, every time a feature or product idea needs to move forward.

PRD Agent started as an internal build to compress that translation step. The brief was a tool, owned by Shipverra, that took short feature or product input from a PM and returned a structured PRD on the other side, following industry standard PRD templates rather than a generic LLM dump. For teams who want the manual version of that same structure first, our guide on how to write a product requirements document walks through the template the agent was trained to follow.

What we built

PRD Agent is what generative AI for product managers looks like when it's scoped to one workflow instead of a general chatbot. The build composition mirrored a real AI Product Engineering engagement: one senior full stack engineer, one mid full stack engineer, a product designer, and a product owner.

The user journey is short. A PM signs in with Google or Microsoft OAuth, provides the feature or product details, and the PRD generator returns the document. The output follows a structured template the PM can review, edit, and download. The agent is configured around the PRD format the workspace standardized on, so results stay consistent across PMs instead of varying with whichever prompt each person happens to write. That template discipline is what separates an ai prd tool a team can standardize on from a raw chat window.

Stack:

  • React with Tailwind CSS on the frontend
  • Python with Flask on the backend
  • The OpenAI API for generation
  • Google and Microsoft OAuth for authentication

Backing that up, the whole system is open source. Most PRD generator tools are closed SaaS: you get the output, not the pipeline. Opening up the prompt structure, the template enforcement, the OAuth flow, and the generation logic means a team can run PRD Agent on its own infrastructure, swap in its own PRD format, or read the code before building something similar in-house. It's evidence the tool holds up under inspection, not the headline.

The hosted version also works as a lead generation surface for Shipverra: a user can request a project quote before downloading the PRD, so the tool that solves the workflow problem is the same surface that opens the conversation about building the thing the PRD describes. Teams evaluating this pattern for their own product can read more about AI Product Engineering.

Outcome

  • Github Repository

  • Licence MIT

PRD Agent compresses PRD authoring from hours to minutes for the PMs who use it, with a standardized, reviewable, downloadable output every time. For Shipverra, the hosted tool runs double duty: a genuine productivity tool for internal and friendly users, and a lead generation surface that starts real product conversations. The open source release extends that same value to any team that wants to run or adapt the system rather than rebuild it from scratch.

Planned enhancements, additional PRD templates, Jira and Confluence integration, and generation quality improvements, sit on top of that working baseline.

Engagement FAQ

What does generative AI actually do for a product manager?

In PRD Agent's case, it takes a short feature or product brief, one or two paragraphs, and turns it into a full structured PRD following an industry standard template, so the PM edits and reviews instead of drafting from a blank page.

Is PRD Agent open source?

Yes. The full application, including the prompt structure, template enforcement, OAuth flow, and generation logic, is released as open source so a team can run it on its own infrastructure or adapt it.

What tech stack powers PRD Agent?

React with Tailwind CSS on the frontend, Python with Flask on the backend, the OpenAI API for generation, and Google or Microsoft OAuth for sign-in.

What are good ai tools for product managers who need to write PRDs faster?

PRD Agent is one concrete example: it enforces a standard PRD template instead of returning a generic AI response. For the manual version of the same structure, see our guide on how to write a product requirements document.

Can a team customize the PRD template PRD Agent uses?

Yes. Because the code is open source, a team can swap in its own PRD format instead of the one Shipverra's workspace standardized on.

Who built PRD Agent?

A small internal team: one senior full stack engineer, one mid full stack engineer, a product designer, and a product owner, the same composition as a real AI Product Engineering engagement.
